Installing the Vue Gen3

What is actually involved

A licensed electrician mounts the monitor in or beside your distribution board, clamps sensors around conductors that are never cut, and connects a four-wire harness to three spare MCB ways. Around 45 to 90 minutes.

Before you buy: five checks

  1. Will a 22 mm clamp close around your incoming phase cable? Insulation included. This is the most common reason an installation cannot proceed — measure at survey.
  2. Do you have three spare single-pole MCB ways, one on each phase? If not, an electrician can splice into existing ways.
  3. Is there room? The unit is 145 × 70 × 28 mm — about eight DIN modules wide — and needs 50 mm clearance from uninsulated live parts. An adjacent enclosure is a common solution.
  4. How will it reach the internet? 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi at the board, or an Ethernet point. Check signal at the board, not at the router.
  5. Does your supply suit the device? 3-phase 4-wire “Y” (star) with a neutral, under 200 A per phase. Delta is not supported.

Specific to Indian boards: RCCB protection

An RCCB compares current flowing out on the phases against current returning on the neutral. The Vue draws its supply from three phase MCBs plus a neutral — and if the phases come from downstream of the RCCB while the neutral is taken upstream of it, that small current never returns through the RCCB. It sees an imbalance and trips.

The rule: the Vue's phase connections and its neutral connection must be on the same side of the RCCB. A trip when the Vue's MCBs are first switched on is almost always this, not a faulty monitor.

Two more India-specific points

  • Do not touch the utility meter. It is sealed and is the DISCOM's property. The main sensors clamp the incoming phase conductors inside your own board.
  • Wire colours differ. On the Emporia harness, blue is phase L3 and white is neutral — not the Indian convention. The electrician should identify every conductor by testing, never by colour, and label the four harness leads before wiring.

Who should do the work

A licensed electrician. Service conductors in a distribution board remain live even with the main switch off. We supply full documentation; we do not recommend self-installation under any circumstances.
