FAQ — Vue Gen3
Emporia Vue Gen3, for Indian installations. If your question is not here, WhatsApp us on +91 98310 37220.
Choosing a model
Will it work on my Indian 3-phase supply?
Yes, if your supply is 3-phase 4-wire “Y” (star) with a distributed neutral — the standard Indian LT connection at 415 V line-to-line, 240 V line-to-neutral. The Vue Gen3 is specified for exactly this. It does not support Delta or 3-wire supplies without a neutral.
What if my load exceeds 200 A per phase?
Then the Vue cannot monitor your main incomer. An over-range sensor understates rather than reads high, which is worse than no measurement. Monitor a sub-distribution board within the limit instead, or use several monitors under one account. Tell us your connected load and we will advise honestly.
How do I choose between 8 and 16 circuits?
Count the circuits whose consumption would change a decision you make — not the circuits in your panel. Under eight, take the 8-sensor model. Nine or more, take sixteen. Adding sensors later costs ₹1,200 each plus a second electrician visit. See Which model do I need?
Will the sensor fit around my service cable?
The main sensor's aperture is 22 mm and the conductor must pass through it with its insulation. On a domestic 3-phase service this is usually comfortable; on a heavier service it may not be. Measure at survey — this is the most common reason an installation cannot proceed.
Installation
Can I install it myself?
No. This is work inside a live distribution board, where service conductors remain energised even with the main switch off. Engage a licensed electrician. We supply full documentation but do not recommend self-installation under any circumstances.
How long does installation take?
Around 45 to 90 minutes for a licensed electrician on a straightforward 3-phase domestic board; longer if an adjacent enclosure has to be fitted.
My RCCB trips when the monitor is switched on. Why?
Almost always because the monitor's neutral is taken from a different side of the RCCB than its phase connections — the RCCB sees the imbalance and trips. The phases and the neutral must be on the same side of the RCCB. See Installing the Vue Gen3.
Can the sensors go at the meter?
No. Your utility meter is sealed and is the DISCOM's property. The main sensors clamp the incoming phase conductors inside your own distribution board.
Setup and connectivity
Does it work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
No — 2.4 GHz only (802.11 b/g/n). If your router is 5 GHz-only, enable a 2.4 GHz band or use the Ethernet port.
Does it work without internet?
No. Data is processed and stored in Emporia's cloud, so the monitor needs a working connection to report. There is no local-only mode.
What is the Ethernet port for?
A Gen3 addition that supplements Wi-Fi — Bluetooth is still used for initial setup, and where both are connected the monitor prefers the wired link. In meter rooms and basements it is frequently the difference between a working installation and a callback. Cable not supplied.
Hardware and compatibility
I own a Gen2. Can I reuse my existing sensors?
No. Gen2 sensors terminate in a 3.5 mm plug; Gen3 uses screw terminal blocks. They are not interchangeable in either direction. An upgrade from Gen2 means a complete new sensor set as well as the monitor. See Gen2 owners.
I own a Gen2 — should I upgrade?
Only for a specific reason: you need wired Ethernet because Wi-Fi does not reach your board, you need CT leads cut to length, or you want DIN-rail mounting. Both generations measure to ±2%, both support solar, both run on the same app. A working Gen2 is not an inferior instrument.
Solar
Does it monitor rooftop solar and net metering?
Yes — branch sensors on the inverter's AC output, main sensors on the incoming supply, and Bi-Directional mode in the app. Generation, self-consumption, import and export appear separately. See Solar & net metering.
Can I use it to contest my electricity bill?
You can use it to know when something needs investigating. It is a monitoring instrument, not an approved billing instrument — no BIS certification, and its readings have no legal standing with a DISCOM.
Buying, warranty and support
Is it BIS certified?
No. The Vue Gen3 is not BIS certified and is not approved under any Indian government or utility scheme. It holds UL 61010 and UL 2808 safety certifications, and FCC, ISED, CE, PSE and UKCA EMC certifications. It is a monitoring device — it does not replace your utility meter.
Is there a subscription?
No. The Emporia app is free permanently — no in-app purchases, no paywalled features. You pay for the hardware once.
What is the warranty?
One year, handled by us in Kolkata rather than through an overseas returns process.
Do I get a GST invoice?
Yes, on every order. GSTIN 19AARFG8134A1ZB.
